Squier used to have closed-gear tuners and some headstock say J instead of Jazz.
Is there something that seems off to you?

(“Crafted in China”) - C = China, Y = Yako (Taiwan), the first number following the prefix is the year. 8-digit number.

Example: CY2xxxxxxx = made by Yako in 2002-03

It says in the back that its crafted in china, while some of the affinity basses that I've encountered has a designed by fender

  8. Lots of people rag on those closed back tuners, but otherwise should be on par with the other affinities (ie, hit or miss) tuners are easy enough to replace if they don't work. Wilkinson tuners run 30-40 a set.

  9. I believe when they moved to Indonesia they started using the designed by fender label

Affinities are not the best Squiers around, and there are some good ones.

I probably wouldn't buy an Affinity NEW, as they are all over the place used … the one in the OP is simply an Affinity from the era that the smaller closed gear tuning machines were being used … other Affinity's from other era's will differ, but all in all they are Affinity's, and each can be judged on its own merits …

With that said, we opened a large outdoor show last summer for a national touring blues act, and the bass player was actually playing a Precision version of the OP Affinity bass, small rectangular closed machines and all … sounded fine, and didn't hurt his wallet a bit ;)

There is so much variety of basses that are way better than the affinities in the used market, but if your set on a Squier go for a Vintage Modified or better yet a Classic Vibe...
