As much as I love the V3, the V7 5-string has that sound and tone for a cheaper price, but cheap doesn’t always mean “cheap.” Sire did a remarkable job on the V7. Just bought a Sire V7 Vintage yesterday. I play mostly punk but learned jazz bass coming up. Got this for the great value, and for the look. As for tone, I feel that pedals have come such a long way that you can get any tone you're looking for with the right gear.

If I could find a Sire P or J at under 8.5lbs I'd buy one.
