I know we have been having a drought here in California. But with that said, I have forgotten what the sun looks like. It has been gray and wet for days. I am even starting to get depressed. The forecast says we have more storms stacked up over the Pacific that will be coming in. I want our sunshine back. I guess this is a first world problem.

  2. That shot looks like a normal fall/winter day where I live. Up here on the island in British Columbia.

If rain gets you down , you won't like it up here at all.

Vancouver Island? We were just there last week. Beautiful. Even had a bit of snow!

  4. We've had lots of snow and slop this year. Sure we get our good days now and then. But rain is a staple up here in the fall ( and winter too).

As I write this, it is grey, overcast and raining.

This is what the main road into our area looks like today - 2 of 4 lanes closed.
    AR-170109771.

And this is my usual commute route. Guess I'll be taking a different route for a few months.

Sunshine? You need to move inland where the marine layer is more rare! :smug:

I hear you though. It's kind of a bummer. I had an outdoor gig that was fortunately moved inside yesterday. :atoz:

I'm in Sacramento, and I'm loving it!

We get more than enough sunshine around here; it's about time we get a real rainy season.

Pretty much the whole state, with the exception of the deserts, have low cloud ceilings now.
Here are the airport weather reports thru out the state. I think the closes airport to you is KFUL, Fullerton.

I honestly got pretty used to it when I lived an hour north of Seattle, it isn't bad after awhile. Gets you in a great mindset to write some trippy ambient tunes!

Hey! That qualifies as a nice day up here!

It's snowed then commenced raining here this morning, just another day in paradise!

  11. There's a lake not 60 miles from where I live that gets 221 inches of rainfall annual average.

    Sure does.
If that was WA, you'd see some paddleboarders, a few boats, and some people on the beach.
That dock would be covered with seals, and ignorant tourists feeding them Cheetos.

The rainy season is certainly upon us here in Seattle and surrounding areas ... That's unofficially mid October - July 5th! If it's not raining in the winter months, it's sunny & clear, but very cold (slightly under 32°F.) That's not absolute, as i remember most of this past May being summer like.

I think the weather is a contributing factor to Seattle being so well known for its high coffee (and heroin) consumption rates, and i heard that the Aurora bridge is the 2nd most suicidal jumping off point, only behind the Golden Gate Bridge in SF ... so yea, it definitely can tinker with your mental well being.

I moved here from Los Angeles, and remember the first three rainy winters being quite depressing until i got used to what to expect.

If all you're seeing is gray, perhaps you should get up in the air for a while! Have you been able to fly lately?

Lived in NW WA my whole life until a few months ago. Now SW WA.

People are under the impression that it rains a lot, especially Seattle and environs. It doesn't. It rains a lot of the time. Typical winter overcast day will be high of 44, low of 41, and no sign of the sun. That might go on, with minor variations, for weeks. And on one of these days where it has rained all day, you might be surprised to hear on the news that the rain gauge registered 0.13". Yes, after a whole day of rain.

So it rains all the time, but you really don't get very wet. At less (and sometimes much less) than a quarter inch per day, it takes a lot of rainy days to get to 35" of precip a year. 35" is not all that much. Many places in the US get far more, and they do not have a rainy reputation. I think what gets people about the northwest is the weeks on end where the sun goes away, and the fact that unlike in many parts of the country it doesn't just rain and get it over with so the sun can come out again. It may not often rain hard here, but for many months it is never quite not raining, either. And yes, it can get dismal.

There are very wet exceptions. Olympic peninsula, parts of the Cascade foothills, Grays Harbor.... those are all far wetter than Seattle. Even here, closer to Portland, the rain is different. It can rain an inch overnight, easy. Or it can rain and quit and rain and quit six times in a day, sometimes delugically. I'm not used to that.

    Good luck down there.

We had a one day break in the weather Sunday so wife, dog and I flew last Sunday for lunch in El Monte, CA. They have a nice little airport cafe just adjacent to the ramp there. Thanks for asking.

I don't fly often, but after living here for a few years, one day boarding a big plane to fly east helped me put it in perspective. Previously it felt as if the sun just skipped the NW for very long stretches. Once the plane took off and broke thru the dense cloud layer, it was sunshine all above the cotton like puffy clouds, with several beautiful snow capped mountain tops poking thru ... one of the most spectacular sights I've ever seen :) Made me realize that the sun was still always up there, it just didn't reach the ground. Whenever i start to feel the SADs (seasonal affective disorder), i visualize that take off and it makes me smile.

And @blastoff99 is totally right about the low volume of constant rain ... yearly it doesn't add up to much. Normally, it's just a drizzle enough to mess up your hairs :rage:

He is from California, we need to keep them Californians from realizing that it is pretty, green with other colors in the fall and that you can breath up north so they do not move up. :smug:

Every time one of my relatives from L.A. came up to visit they think it is great up here, then they move up. :help:

Crap! @catcauphonic came from L.A. You help improve the Northwest so you can stay. :cigar:
