In my search to find a moderately priced Ibanez SR800 I came across this on GC.

It's listed as a SR1200E on the website and only has one crappy picture.

I requested more pictures and recieved these today. It's apparently a 1996 SR1200 Korean model. I've never played a thru neck bass before but I think it would be OK.

They are asking $500 with a case and didn't seem like they were budging on the price.

I'm trying to be patient and wait for a deal on a MIJ SR800 but finding one in decent shape (and black) for around $300 is seeming impossible.

Maybe. If you can't play it then you risk buying it and not liking how the pickups or preamp sound. I'm an SR player, but I've never been impressed with their stock pickups.

I've had SR's with AFR pickups before. I haven't really played a lot of basses so I dont have much to compare them too either.

Kind of just narrowing it down to this or a SR800. Not sure if it's worth paying a little extra for this or not.

Not being able to play it before I buy is also making this choice very difficult.

    I think it's a tad rich, i'd bite for $399.

It does look nice and in good shape. I personally think this would be better than than the 800, but that depends on whether you prefer bolt-on or neck-through.

I haven't played the AFR pups. I had DJX/DPX pickups in my SR480 P/J and replaced them with Dimarzio Model P/J - much better.

That's what I was thinking. It seems like all SR basses are $100 more than they should be right now.

  7. Patience is the key. SR 800 models constantly pop up on GC site for under $300. Having said that, I really haven't counted which percentage of those was black.

I believe you but most are are $400-500 range right now. The only $300ish ones are silver. Uhg, I'm bad at patience.

See if they'll comp your shipping. It's pretty common for GC to do that. Then you have 45 days to take it back if you don't like it and you're out nothing (if you have a GC nearby). You'll have experience with the neck thru and that model, so it could be educational :) Otherwise keep an eye on it, they reduce prices on the website often.

Those pics seem to indicate that $500 is too much. ;)
$300-400 seems more reasonable, depending on unknown variables...

What did they do? Replace a knob with a jack? Still might be worth looking at for that price, as long as you have a GC nearby to have it shipped to.

That looks like a great bass, but you can get a LOT with $500 these days. Patience will likely get you the MIJ Ibby you are looking for, in the range you are looking for. Keep an eye on Craigslist. I have seen 3-4 on mine this past year with a good price.

Must not have been that bad of deal because it's gone now. LoL

Are you looking at Reverb.com? I've seen a good number of SR800's there in the past.

$500 is steep. Not outrageous, but high.
