@Thatguy78 If the volume and tone controls mitigate the problem, the noise is being injected somewhere in the preamp. It could be a tube problem, but it could be lot's of other things as well. It's possible the noise is being injected into the preamp, but the source of noise is not in the preamp. Also intermittent problems are very difficult to troubleshoot.
If you don't have an electronics background, about all you can do before sending the amp to a tech is swap out tubes and do a visual inspection to see if you can find something super obvious. However, this amp has close to 700 volts inside, so it's a bit dangerous for you to go poking around. For the safety of you and the amp, it's a better idea to send it to an expert IMHO.
If you want to try swapping at a few tubes, it would be helpful if you could narrow the location of the problem down a bit. This can be done if you know the signal path. The idea is you adjust the controls to determine which controls have an impact. Then you replace the tube stage(s) that immediately precede the first control that impacts the problem.
The original SVTs used three 12DW7 in channel one, one 12AX7 in channel two, and one 6C4 to blend the two channels. All of these tube types have two triodes, except the 6C4 which only has one triode. All nine triodes are used.
A 12DW7 is equivalent to one 12AX7 triode and one 12AU7 triode. A 6C4 is equivalent to one 12AU7 triode.
The SVT VR is pretty much functionally identical to a vintage SVT, but it does not use the same signal path. In a vintage amp, the signal flows in channel 1 sequentially through the two triodes in V1, then the two triodes in V3 and finally the two triodes in V4. V2 is the 12AX7 used for Channel 2.
My belief is the Heritage 50th AV has the same signal path as the VR, but a few components are changed. I have access to the VR schematics, but have not seen 50th AV schematics, so this info could be wrong.
In the SVT VR the signal in channel 1 flows in and out of various 12AX7 and 12AU7 tubes. Here's the order: V1a, V2b, V2a, V3b, V3a, V4b. Since the VR uses three 12AX7s and two 12AU7s, ten triodes are available, but only 9 are used, just like the vintage amps. The unused triode is V1b. V5a and V5b make up the gain stages of channel 2, and V4a fills the role of the 6C4.
Signal Paths:
Channel 1 (Input Jack Network), (V1a, V2b), (Ultra Low and Ultra High), (Volume), (V2a), (Bass and Treble), [(V3b, V3a, V4b), Mid**]--->(V4a mixer)
** The Mid control circuit is connected across V3b and V4b.
Channel 2 (Input Jack Network), (V5a), (Ultra Low and Ultra High), (Volume), (V5b), (Bass and Treble)--->(V4a mixer)
Both Channels are mixed at the input of V4a.
Examples
If the Channel 1 Volume control has an impact on the sound, the problem may be V1a or V2b. Replace one tube at a time.
If the problem is in Channel 2, replace V5.
If the preamp controls have an impact on the noise, but changing tubes does not fix the problem...take the amp to a good tech.
