... so we drove up to the mountains to my stepmother's ranch and played in the snow. Well, the kids played in the snow - we played cards in the Short Branch Saloon at the ranch. It snowed for a while when we were up there. At about 3:30 we took off back to crystal-blue skies at the coast. It's still very cold here though - low 50s right now. Hopefully we won't freeze. Here's the Short Branch. It's heated by a cast-iron stove and is very cozy.
As a Californian living in Texas I still get a little excited when it snows. So when I looked at my phone and it said it was snowing, I ran to the front door and looked outside to nothing but disappointment. No snow, but plenty of ice so far. And ice SUCKS.
i'm in the Mendo hills camp'n near Squatch turf! ~25 degrees at about 1800' elevation when i got up at 2:30a to relive myself. i swore i could hear ice crystals forming in the mud puddles on the path to the latreen! good time for a shot of Habenero infused Patron,.. just sayin'!
Meh, what's the big deal? We get snow on a regular basis usually starting in late November through to March... sometimes early April!! This year we actually had a green Christmas, which is very unusual—'course, it's 25°F, and with the wind chill it's 8°F, so even though it doesn't really look like winter, it certainly feels like it!!
Yeah... but I have a sneaky feeling that there may have been some artistic intervention there... I didn't take the pic, so I can't say for sure... But it's definitely cool.
Low 50's, huh? SUCH hardship! Early this week it was -17 when I got up. Made it all the way to +2 degrees here in northern Colorado. We should be in the mid-20's to lot 30's this weekend. That's going to be sweatshirt or jacket weather. One thing I have observed: after summer warmth, if the temp gets down into the 30's or 40's it really does feel cold, especially if the humidity is high. I sometimes want a fairly heavy coat at the first 30-degree day. But that's not a low enough temp to make your body adapt. Let it get down to 10 degrees for a couple of days, and your body pays attention and goes WHOOPS!! Time to reset the ol'body thermostat!! And when the temp goes back up to 30, you feel pretty comfortable outside with a medium weight jacket. I have seen this every year - when the temp drops far enough, your body adapts and you are better able to deal with low temps. Up until then it's tough.
Wait, this is impossible. Southern California always has ideal weather. I know because I've read it in TBOT many times.
