It's all about the tone, right? Some advice needed...

I've got a really nice bass, IMHO. MIJ Ibanez BTB510E with mahogany body, five piece neck, upscale hardware, and I've swapped out the stock electronics for Nordstrand Big Splits and an Audere preamp. It sounds good but I always seem to be fiddling with the sound. Recently I played a USA Musicman Sterling and the tone blew me away - slightly hollow and vintage sounding with great growl - but the $1400 price tag is way out of my league.

Today I happened by my local GC and found an old OLP MM fiver. Tarnished frets and dirty fretboard but otherwise in great shape. I tried it and I got that same Sterling sound!! They've got it for $199 but there's no way I can come up with the $220 I would need without selling my current bass.

    What would you do?

You've got a goal...save, Save, SAVE. But don't get rid of your BTB510E IMHO.

Hmm... if you're good with wood and extremely brave... route out for a MM pickup right where it would be on a musicman, then switch out electronics. But then again that would cost 220 lol

Sorry dude... I want a P and a squier is on the bay for 100 BIN and I can't : ( GAS sucks

I thought about that one too!

  6. Layaway. Pay at least 25%, no interest and I believe you have 60 days to pay it off.

Don't ask! Rule: You can never have too many basses!

And anyway you are in love! Well, I own an OLP 5er and it's great. Note that it's passive and you really have to play around with the knobs to pull that MM stingray sound out of it. But that sound IS in there and there is NOTHING quite like it! I'm sure that eventually mine is going active to get the true stingray range out of it.

    Hence check the "rule" above.

Hey when I fell in love it was with an Alembic fretless 6 string! And I had to come up with two grand! (don't ask).

I have been in a dilemma like this recently. You're always gonna want that sound, and you wont be happy until you have it. So go out and get it so you can start loving (not liking) your bass time.

For 220$ thats awesome. I spent 600$ on my sound lol some here have spend 10 000$.
