I've just spent a week at a camp studying with Mark Schatz (of Nickel Creek/Claire Lynch/Tony Rice fame, if you're a bluegrass fan). At one point, he went round the room and played everyone else's bass; all sounded better with him than they did with us. He'd been playing a Chadwick folding all week.

Later, another bassist borrowed his Chadwick after stepping in to back him up while he played clawhammer banjo, and it sounded noticeably different again.

OK, maybe it's not *all* in the hands, but it amazed me how much tone a good player can coax out of just about anything.
