I have a Musicman 4 string that I recently routed to add a neck J PU.
It's an old basslines 2 coil J PU and it does not balance well with the SMB-4a already in the bass.(the MM is really much louder than the J).

My question is to all the people who have a J-MM bass, what PUs do you use ?
What neck J should I get to have a more balanced sound between the 2 PUs ?(A good 2 coil neck J that will match the smb-4a basslines seymour duncan already in the bass)

i just put a J in my ATK305- i used a dimarzio ultra jazz 5, and it balances just about perfectly. there's a little more bloom on the neck solo'ed, but the difference is what i would expect for the placement difference.
humbuckers generally have higher output than single coils, so you'd want a strong J to work with that. i've heard the dimarzio model J is pretty ballsy. FWIW.

You should try Aero Music Man. It has different options that you cab choose to fix your problem. Larry would be very helpful to you too.

Well the Seymour Duncan Classic Stack Jazz bass pickup would certainly fit the bill, its like 20k dc resistance. Some other ideas,if the bass has an active preamp you may be able to adjust the output gain for the MM pup or maybe add a trim pot to the circuit if it doesn't have one?

After a little homework, it is not a J hot stack.
It's a 2 coil pro active, that's why it did not balance.
I ordered a stack J thanks to fellow TBer Mr Matt.

I just installed the J PU in my stingray (basslines hot stack neck)
And the MM PU is way louder than the J.
Any ideas on balancing the 2 PUs.

Does it not sort it by screwing the MM pickup further down into the body?
What did you do for switching?
You might have a loading problem

I have this custom bass with SD Basslines. A MM (bridge) and a SJB-1 (Neck).
    They balance very well.

  9. Are you running both pickups passive? If the MM is running through a pre is the J also?

    This is passive.

Thanks jongor, it was built by a brazilian luthier called Marcio Zaganin.
Got just few pics of her…
