Jaco Casts a Long Shadow

    It is striking how huge Jaco’s influence is on young Jazz oriented bass guitarists. Hadrien Feraud, here earlier in his career, I believe, consumed Jaco before establishing himself, and the same is true of so many others. Jaco compositions and songs on which he played bass have become standards for up and coming bassists. I know I am saying nothing new, but it is striking how Hadrien Feraud totally nailed Jaco’s vibe on that video.

    The same could be said for Terence "Geezer" Butler in the world of Heavy Metal.

    I just wish they all didn't go for that bridge pickup thing. Loved Jaco's playing but I never dug that bridge pickup thing. Not bassy enough and too barky for me.

    My thoughts exactly. When Jaco did it, it was a technical breakthrough because you can make the bass "speak" with less effort. But all lot of his recordings (especially the earlier ones) actually have a somewhat fuller, rounder tone than what his followers all choose to imitate.
