I don't know if i should put this in a DB forum, here or in recordings, but i think it would be best off here.

    Well my question is:

Are there any recordings with Jaco playing upright?

  2. I've never seen him use one, but I have read article's where he talks about them a good deal. I think this thread would belong here:)

Jaco apparently once bought an upright when he was growing up in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Anyone who lives on the east coast knows that it's humid and hot during the summer. This upright that he bought exploded because of the humidity. According to what I read, he was kinda turned off on the instrument (upright) after this experience.

Apparently ther is a quote of jacos where he say something along the lines of the upright being too much work for not enough sound, so i dont think there are any recordings of him on a bull fiddle.
I may be wrong tho' so if anyone does know of any recordings like that plz let me know.

    Ed,

There is at least one recording of Jaco playing upright, although I don't know anything about what tune/plaeyrs, etc.

Bob Bobbing is putting together what is supposed to be a 2 or 3 CD set of stuff that Jaco recorded in South Florida, going waaaaaaaaaay back to the early years, and it's to be called "Dixie Highway". You can find reference to it somewhere at http://www.jacopastorius.com. But don't hold your breath...it's been promised to be released "any day now" for more than a year. The latest I've seen (I believe) is a release date of Dec. 1 (Jaco's birthday) of this year.

I'm curious about it,but I'm not too optimistic that it'll be satisfying. Although Jaco's life was certainly cut short, he was enough of a phenomenon while he was alive that I'm sure if there was "gold" in them thar early recordings, somebody would have released them way before this. JMHO.

I dunno, Craig; for now, I'm going to be optimistic about these un-heard 'gems'. I am suspecting a somewhat 'raw' vibe, though. Fine with me! ;)
I'm about 100% sure Dixie Highway will be better than what we've been getting since Jaco's death(with the exception of the 30th Birthday Concert).

Also, I'm a believer there's still plenty of *great* JP in the vaults...through the grapevine, I've 'heard' there's a couple of kick-ass Weather Report concerts still unreleased.
So why aren't they released? Per usual, it's legal issues & who gets paid what %...I guess.

  10. on a side note, if and when any weather report live stuff is released, would the pastorius family even get anything. its all zawinul/shorter stuff so wouldnt all the publishing go to them or does pastorius get a cut just for being on there?

Christian McBride does a tribute to Jaco on his "SciFi" album where he plays Havona exactly as Jaco did, but on Double Bass - then goes off to a further solo - it can be done!

  12. No offense to you bruce. but when i said that, i ment if jaco had written his work on an upright....
