Jaco. the man. If you consider yourself a legit bass player, you absolutely must own: Weather Report - Heavy Weather Jaco Pastorius - Jaco Pastorius Pat Metheny - Bright Size Life Joni Mitchell - Shadows & Light If you had to listen to just one track on each album: "Havona", "Donna Lee", "Bright Size Life", and "In France They Kiss on Mainstreet" from each album respectively. If I could change anything about my life, I would have started playing bass at an earlier age and I would have started listening to jazz music, especially Jaco's playing at a much earlier age. For that matter, I would have started listening to Paul Chambers, Ron Carter, and Ray Brown at the same time. If you don't know who any of these cats are, you need to start buying jazz music right now. You'll thank me for it later.
oh yeah, and Jaco died in 1987. To sum up a long story quickly: Jaco was trying to get into an after hours nightclub in Florida. He was totally f*cked up. The bouncer wouldn't let him it. He gave the bouncer a ration of s*it. The bouncer finally got irritated and proceeded to kick the living hell out of him. When the cops got there, they found him lying in the street in a pool of blood. He went into a coma and died 9 days later. The bouncer got charged with manslaughter and got out of jail 9 months later on good behavior. R.I.P. Who loves ya?
