Jaco percussion sound

  1. Hi!

    Does anyone know how to make the conga sound that Jaco do in the begining of teen town.
    Weather Report 8:30

    I'm trying but there is something missing.

    I've never tried to duplicate it exactly, but in my experimentation I have found that if you palm-mute the strings with your left hand, and then strike the strings with the palm (or bottom side of your fingers) up on the fingerboard, you can achieve this punchy, percussive effect. You essentially treat the bass like a drum to do this, only you have to make sure the strings don't actually ring out. You have to make sure you deaden them.

    JazznFunk, i'm pretty sure, nailed it. I've seen Jaco do it on a video, he does that while he slides up and down the fingerboard.
