    Now that is a list!

You really should purchase standing in the shadows of motown also!

There is another book called motown bass by
hal leonard. Its all Jamerson lines. Just got it today in fact. Its really good and includes stuff that isn't in Standing in the Shadows. A few of them are. Like Reach Out. Plus a different version of Grapevine. The playing on the included Cd is very good also.

Trying to show me up, eh Xavier???

  6. Not at all, jazzbo. It just so happens that I was compiling the list (swiped it from some site -which I will give credit to, as soon as I find it again) yesterday, to give to my students this afternoon, for reference.

    X Man-
...isn't that Bob Babbitt on "If I Were Your Woman"? :) Jamerson-esque, to be sure, yet doesn't sound like JJ(IMO).
  9. Jim -
My understanding is that, on a number of the tunes listed, studio work was done by 2 bassists - Jamerson/Babbitt or Jamerson/Newton (Tony). There are a few sites on the net that corroborate that 'rumor'.

James is the man, and I enjoy his work with the 4 Tops best of all. The bassline for "Bernadette" is smoking.
  11. I like his bassline from Respect, by Aretha Franklin, that's pretty cool. It's also the only one I know how to play, I should learn some others.

It's not Jamerson on Respect, I don't remember the guy name exactly....
    Tommy Cogbill, or something close....
  13. He is on "Respect" by Stevie Wonder though.

I never heard it from Stevie!!
And I am a Stevie Wonder fan!
I look for it right now!

ANybody know who play on the Otis Redding version?
    Duck Dunn?
  15. Yvon, I'm thinking "I Was Made To Love Her (1967)"
is where SW's rendition of "Respect" appears, and Im almost sure it's JJ on bass - but I could be wrong.

Oh, I think it was Donald Duck on OR's original.
  16. He didn't? Oh, then Tommy Cogbill is good too then.

Jaco lauds Tommy Cogbill in his video(Cogbill also played the line to "Funky Broadway").

    ...and on a slight tangent-
Does anyone know where I can find the unedited version of Dennis Coffey's "Scorpio" featuring Bob Babbitt?

Standing in the SHadows is great because it will give you not only a great list of James' tunes, but some neat insight into them as well. My favorite James tune is "You Dont Have To Be A Star" by Maryln McCoo and Billy Davis. James is smoooooooookin on it!
