Jazz Audition.

Discussion in 'Jazz Technique [DB]' started by pinkflamingo199, Apr 15, 2010.

  1. So, I have my first major audition for an youth ensemble at the University of Michigan. I imagine ill be asked to play a blues, some scales, and a standard or two..
Any idea what judges look for in a bassist?
    Tips?

Solid sense of time/groove/feel. Solid intonation (even if you're playing electric bass). If you have a nice walking line that leads from chord to chord, great.

Anything after these is icing on the cake. If asked to play a solo, play something that you're comfortable playing. Don't worry about trying to impress anybody.

Don't know the parameters of the audition, but might they ask you to do a bit of reading? That's always been part of any audition that I've been involved in.
