Fender Jazz bass is just a model name, like Honda Jazz.
  3. That's right. A Jazz bass isn't a type of bass in the sense that it is completely different than the others, it's just a misleading brand name.

Fender's Jazz bass is similar to their Precision bass but with enough modifications to make it it's own.

The Jazz neck is the same scale as the Precision but narrower at the nut.

The Jazz body is a slightly angled version of the Precision body but feel similar sitting on you.

The pickup configuration is quite different. The Jazz has two single coil pups and the precision has one split coil humbucker.

Generally speaking the jazz has a nice midrange clarity and the precision has a beefy bottom end. These are wide sweeping generalizations though. John Paul Jones has a beefy jazz tone. Geddy Lee makes good use of the mids in his Jazz bass.

Basically the Fender Jazz bass is a great all around bass that anybody would be proud to own.

Don' be fogettin' de reggae, mon, Family Man Barret's stuff with Bob Marley was pretty much all on a Jazz and same is true for most (but not all) other old reggae bands.
