i have seen a bunch of shows lately where the bass player, playing a JB, has duck-taped the top of the bass near the front strap loop.

    any idea why?

i would like to avoid this happening to me,

    Too stingy to buy straplocks?

  3. Yeah, pretty much.

There is nothing functionally wrong with the Jazz bass' strap buttons. He probably ripped them out and was too stingy to buy strap locks, or get the buton holes fixed. Also, it's a punk thing.

"Too stingy to buy strap locks?" Yeah, that's a good guess. I've seen other bassists & guitarists do this, so I don't think it's a problem only inherent with Jazz basses. I don't have them on all my basses, but strap locks are definitely cheap insurance when it comes to keeping your instrument on your shoulder.
