I was looking at fretless basses at Guitar Center. I was hoping to try out a fretless fender jazz but they didn't have one  . I did try out a used guild that I liked. A fretless b-302 maybe? I don't really remeber that was about $450.
I did try a fender fretted Jazz and my question is: would the basic feel and sound be the same in a fretted as a fretless?

BTW, would you guys say a fender or a guild is usually the better instrument?

  2. sound would be slightly diffent. that was a easy one. if u can find another fretted bass. and the same bass but fretless the sound diffenec would be that same as a fretted jazz to a fretless jazz.

  3. Niether one is better, just different. Fenders are usually of between good to excellent quality. The Guild you're talking about hasn't been made since the early 80s, IIRC. If the Guild is 20 something years old and plays/sounds good, that speaks for itself.

The Guild will also sound different. The B-302 had one pickup at the neck, and the other one in approximately a Rickenbacker bridge position. Try them both before you buy.

Also, the Fender will be MUCH easier to upgrade or locate replacement parts for if necessary.

    Good luck.
