    Hello.

I am a huge fan of Jazz Trios, with piano, double bass and drums. It's my favorite formation to listen to, nowadays.

I like other formations, I listen to them all, and i go through phases where I mostly listen to big bands, or quartets, or quintets, etc.. But lately, the Trios are taking almost all my listening time. There is something about it that gets my attention. One of them is that I can really listen to the double bass, and it has a more "complete" role in the music. And they are more intimate sessions, I think. Don't get me wrong, I love some trumpet, sax and trombone, or vibraphone, harmonica, guitar. But the Trios are more personal, close interaction between the musicians, don't you think? There's definitely something special about it.

So, some of my favorites are:

Michel Petrucciani, Anthony Jackson, Steve Gadd (I know, no double bass, but it's Anthony Jackson).

    Every Bill Evans Trio:
Bill Evans, Scott LaFaro, Paul Motian.
Bill Evans, Eddie Gomez, Marty Morell.
Bill Evans, Eddie Gomez, Jack DeJohnette.
Bill Evans, Teddy Kotick, Paul Motian.
Bill Evans, Sam Jones, Philly Joe Jones.

Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Ed Thigpen.

Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette.

Brad Mehldau, Larry Grenadier, Jeff Ballard.

Danilo Perez, John Patitucci, Brian Blade.

Chick Corea, Avishai Cohen, Jeff Ballard.

Shai Maestro, Avishai Cohen, Mark Guiliana.

Shai Maestro, Jorge Roeder, Ziv Ravitz.

Roy Assaf, Jorge Roeder, Ronen Itzik.

So, what are your favorite Jazz Trios?

Based on my choices above, can you recommend me some more? I am a little obsessed by Shai Maestro with Jorge Roeder and Ziv Ravitz. Do you know some similar Trios?

What do you think about the Trio formation?

Anyone here is part of a Jazz Trio? Can you post some audio or video?

Thanks for reading. Let's share some Trio love!

EDIT: Here is the playlist that was created in response to the replies in the thread - CF:

I'm partial to the Helge Lien Trio, especially their Badgers album.

I just thought of another favourite, though a bit older than the last one:

Though written in German you can take a look to this thread in another forum... there is an "not so uninteresting" collection of "classical jazz trios" ;)

I’m going to share my transcription of “Cinema G”. I mess up the tempo in the last part, but the notes are there.

You didn’t mention the Bill Evans Trio with Chuck Israels on bass, which I like.

There are so many fabulous piano trios!

Lately i’ve been loving this record of John Hicks with Dwayne Burno and Victor Lewis

Robert Glasper has a long running trio with Vicente Archer and Damion Reid

There are a couple of albums of Geri Allen, Charlie Haden, and Paul Motian together which are well worth listening to.

Bill Charlap continues the tradition of exploring the great American songbook in his trio with Peter Washington and Kenny Washington

McCoy Tyner’s Supertrios record has Ron Carter and Tony Williams on half and Eddie Gomez and Jack DeJohnette on the other half. Killer!

Hank Jones had several iterations of his Great Jazz Trio. I like this one with Buster Williams and Tony Williams

Don’t forget the classic Ahmad Jamal Trio with the great Israel Crosby on bass and Vernel Fournier on drums
