This one hasn't officially started yet, but I figured I would start a thread about it now.

    F Style Mandobass
Claro Walnut Top with F Holes
    Black Walnut Chambered Body
Padauk Set-Neck with Black Walnut Stringers
    Ebony Fretboard
Kent Armstrong Pickups with Wooden Covers
    Passive Electronics (Volume and Blend)
    Hipshot Single String Bridge
    Gotoh Tuners
    All Gold Hardware

I will basically be an f style mandolin, but a bass. Ok, ok I know it will be hard to access any frets above 18 and the customer is fine with that and that is how mandolins are. Also it will be over 2" thick so balance won't be much of an issue either. The headstock will be a bit smaller than in the picture to help with neck dive.

Here is my mdf template so far, still need to cut it out.

  2. If you really wanted to make it a mando bass, you should have it be an 8 string. ;)

Cool design, though. I like the headstock.

The 12 string version will be next, because science tells us that 12 string basses are at least 33% cooler than 8 strings. (I'm the customer, BTW, and I'm really looking forward to this one.)

To sand and apply the finish in those places next to the scroll is gonna be tricky.

Tell me about it... and on the headstock...

Luckily it will be an oil and wax finish, so that part will be easy.

I know what you meant but a mandobass only has 4 strings unlike a mandolin, mandola or mandocello.
I love the idea. The Gibson F is an awesome shape.
  8. Wow, that is extremely cool looking. I may have to think about one of these if I ever get enough money.

My 2 cents, you should narrow the headstock more. Get straight pulls on all 4 strings, and pull in the contours at the end of the h/s. Otherwise, a great design.

I agree the headstock needs a little work. In the rendering it wasn't quite centered so that makes the strings on the treble side off a bit. I went ahead and rotated it slightly to correct that. I also brought in each side of the headstock to thin it down. The strings don't pull perfectly straight in the picture, but the could in real life easily.

Very cool Jared. It's great to see someone with so much talent doing so many unique things. I still might take you up on the custom 5'er someday, but the money just isn't in the cards right now.

Yeah I am always up for something new, your design we made way back when is still one of my favorites. I've incorporated many of the design elements into other builds.
  15. I got the buckeye 5 you made after it made it's rounds here, and I have a sneaky feeling that when the money comes up I'll be giving you a call... Keep up the awesome work!

I still haven't officially started this one, but I did roughly cut out the template. I'll start work on the bass next time.

I cut out the ebony fretboard and the fret slots.

I cut out the neck laminates and glued them together.

I bookmatched the claro walnut top and roughly cut out the body shape.

Shot of the roughly cut backside of the neck.

Another front shot with the F holes cut out and the truss rod cover made.

The body top with a "finish" on it.
