They'll be at a small local jazz club, and I'm going. STOKED!
I've never seen Steve, but I did see Flim with the BBs in L.A. at the Wiltern Theatre about 30 years ago. I'm sure this will be a great show.
Is this The Steve Gadd Band, with Walt Fowler and Michael Landau? Dat's gon be freakin' awesome!
You'd think, living in the 4th largest city in the USA, that I'd get a chance to go see a cool show like this.
That's the very one! All those cats can PLAY! Wasn't familiar with Walt or Michael (or Kevin Hays, the keyboard player).
The rhythm section was grooving hard! SG and JJ are both masters of "play what's needed, not what's flashy" though they can flash when they want.
Jimmy was playing is fretted Alembic 5 and the tone was big and round and full. It was a pleasure hearing them all play together - accent on "together".
...you can check out Walt Fowler (& his brothers) with some of Zappa's bands.
I just stumbled on a '70s album by Air Pocket; Fowler brothers' Jazz Fusion band.
Michael Landau is a sessioneer that joins cool bands. IIRC, Karizma (with Colaiuta, Neil Stubenhaus, & David Garfield) is one such project.
Walt and Bruce are on the '88 tour, Tom and Bruce played in the early 70's.
It always spiders out, ask my wallet, Landau’s solo stuff is always worth checking out.
Man, it's refreshing to not see a post about rock or metal music! What is happening here?!?!
Jimmy Johnson was my inspiration to start playing 5 string basses.
First heard him on Doug Cameron CD years ago.
Saw Steve Gadd once with Paul Simon band. He was one of 2 drummers.
Easy gig for him.
...buy my first Alembic. A friend turned me onto F&TBBs in the mid '80s and I loved Jimmy's tone.
You owe it to yourself to check out JJ with Alan Holdsworth (e.g. I.O.U. Live).
Also, Billy Childs' His April Touch.
I mentioned I just stumbled upon Air Pocket (the Fowler Brothers band from the '70s) above...just arrived, the 1st tune is happenin'!
...something else "new" for me-
Crystal Green by Rainbow featuring Will Boulware.
The players are Gadd, Gordon Edwards, Eric Gale, Ralph McDonald, etc.
I sampled some tunes on YT; sounds like Stuff with a sax.
Just ordered from Amazon, thanks for the heads up Jim! I had that Will Boulware on vinyl in the 70's and lost it in a divorce and found it again on a CD just a few years ago, I've always dug that album.
Most of the Eric Clapton era videos from the 90s and the crossroads videos have Steve Gadd on drums.
A gorgeous record with Gadd, Richard Tee, Gordon Edwards, Cornell Dupree, and Eric Gale (as the 'straight' rhythm section) coupled with 'avant' players (Carla Bley, Carlos Ward, Michael Mantler, Roswell Rudd, Bob Stewart) is Bley's 'Dinner Music'. Fer instance, check out the tune 'Ida Lupino'.
Clapton was a member of the Legends band...Gadd, Marcus Miller, David Sanborn, etc. On a whole? Meh.
This one I liked-
Cool. Just added to my Amazon "free" Cloud.
It's time for me to peruse and use that 'free' Cloud. It's looks as though I could fine all sorts of good sounds.
