What about using a Joemeek VC1QCS as a preamp in a bass rig?
Here is some more info about it:
Versatile direct to tape channel with a warm and characterful 1960's sound. The combination current&mode mic-pre, photo optical JOEMEEK compressor, enhancer /de-esser and JOEMEEK meequalizer, provides an analogue signal processing path which is second to none for live recording, studio vocals and instruments.
And because it´s being replaced by Promeek I can get a new one for $450!

Is there any reason why it wouldn´t work?
It should be able to drive a poweramp, right?
Characterful? Is that real word?
I think I once heard someone say their compressors work very well for bass, and you get a parametric eq.
For 450 I would go for it.
I know a guy who uses a vocal style Mindprint pre-amp thingy into a Yamaha power amp. He swears by it. Personally I don't like his bass sound but it could just be his prefered settings. But it works!
