John Lennon: Isolated bass track to "Helter Skelter" (1968)

It fits the song, but I always wonder how it would have been different (better) if Paul would have come up with the line for this song.

 

Recorded on a Bass VI.

 

God, it sounds awful. I'm always amazed how bad, sloppy, and off tempo some bass tracks sound when isolated but how good they sound in the full band mix. As an amateur player in a weekend warrior band, it is encouraging for me to hear this.

 

I assume it was recorded directly to the desk? Bass VI's kinda sound a bit clacky without a nice squishy tube amp to soften up the sound.

But I have to say that I like hearing the imperfections. Makes it sound natural and organic, as if they were making up the song as they went along.

 

John was quite the basher on bass.

 

The Beatles kind of invented metal, is the VI the best bass for metal?
