John Wetton Tribute P-Bass Build

The stripped/oiled alder bass that I have is pretty beat-up and if there are new scratches, I'd never see them. That's one of the things I like about gigging that bass. Not that I am rough on the equipment but gigs are a fairly hostile environment....compared to sitting at home in the studio.

Awesome period for Crimson. The Levin era is good too, of course, but very different with all those polyrhythms. And good tracks from earlier periods too, of course, although some of the Peter Sinfield lyrics feel a bit dated on some of them, but 21st Century Schizoid Man is still a monster of a track.

I met Wetton once, and sadly I had to ask the question about that early 70s bass tone and how he got it. I am sure he's been asked that a thousand times.

I got mine from ebay. They were just generic knobs. They looked like they came off a stove! Ha! I must have searched through nearly a hundred pages of "knobs" before I found something close. Not sure where Vinny found his.
I cannot find a decent picture of Wetton's white bass to see what knobs he had on there. Does anyone know if he was still using the saucers or whatever they are called?

I'll add that I searched for "skirted knobs" on Google images until I came across a set that looked identical to Wetton's. Lo and behold, they fit solid shaft pots.

Some of my favorite bass lines and lyrics (Starless) came from the MAN. Cheers to JW! Nice tribute bass too, btw. :)
