Ok, I decided I'll be building an 8 or 9 string bass soon. This will be an uncommissioned bass but I think I'll have fun building it.

    Now, should I do an 8 or a 9.
    I know 8 are usually tuned F#BEADGCF
What about 9ers? adding upper range or lower?

Which bass would be easier to sell? 8 or 9?

And last question which one of my body shapes would you guys like to see for this project.

    Peace,
    JP

I'm gonna keep a close eye on this one JP!! Especially if it's something you'll offer for sale later..

As far as 9 strings I think going to a high A# might be better since the gear required for a low C# might be unattainable for the majority of people..

I think it would work with any of the styles you offer.. My favorite has always been the Zia.. ;)

Also I'd probably buy either one depending.. :D

  4. Hey JP! :D

I think Lower would be better, the bass is born to be low  (thanks leo!)
    Why not making 11? :p
A good challenge for you! ;)
(Toujours pas de JP basses par chez moi?)
    T'as vu la France? :bawl:

Thanks Mark. Yes, the bass will be an available project, as I do from time to time.

Hi A# ? why not. What kind of string gauge? 0.010??

    Peace,
    JP

Actually I prefer Higher range on ERB ;)

a 11 is still not in my head. Somehow, I think there is a "too much" level that is set at 10 for me at the moment. (hehe a few years ago it was at 7 so who knows??)

    Peace,
    JP

PS: nan pas de JP par chez toi que je sache
PS2: bien fait pour la France, ils avaient qu'à bien jouer. En plus j'suis pour le Portugal :D

You know.. I'm really not sure. I've never played a high A#.. :meh:

Might want to PM Al Caldwell; black9string here at TB.. He has several Conklin 9s and could probably give you the scoop...

    Be a man, make a 9! :D

I think the Zia shape would look best.

I don't think it would be any harder to sell a 9 than an 8.

Well, I know that Stew's on tour with Brotherhood of Groove for the next seven weeks.. He's been lamenting the arrival of his Conklin 10 string during his absence.. I told him he could have Bill send it to me while he was away!! :D :D

  13. I vote 8. Wouldn't you know it JP, but I've been thinking about an 8 for a while. I'll be interested to see this as I already know what I'm getting into with your basses (a whole lotta good!!!). My biggest concern about an 8 string was that I haven't spent any amount of time with basses from any of the guys that make them.

    This could turn out well.

    Fanned frets??? :D ;)

    Hey JP...

I have enough GAS as it is! :smug:

My high string (I usually call it a "Bb") is .15 - and some people use a .10 - but I feel the .10 is too loose (at least on the 3 nine's I've owned).

If you want to hear some sound clip's go to conklin's site and click on the Cherished Challenges Link. There's a different "loop" for each month. All of those are recorded on my 9-string (and I'm pretty sure I use the high string in every track).

    I vote for Naia.

Jean: thanks man, thos clips are nice indeed.
    0.010 is very tiny

Geoff: lol, no fanned frets on this one. Good'ol 34"
Should be a fanned frets project too very soon, I have this 6 string 33 to 35" slotted board here...you know about it.

Mark:Thanks. now i remember reading about Stew's tour.

    Peace,
    JP

Well, thanks again all, for your input.

I think I've decided on a Zia 8 string and I'll probably make it headless as my first Zia 7 worked so well like that.

    Peace,
    JP

JP, I think your plume single cut design would be the best. It will definitely help eliminate the neck dive.
