JPJ played a 60s Jazz for a while and did a lot of great work using an Alembic. He has a signature bass with Alembic.

But yes, he has played others:

  5. He retired that bass (a 62 I think) in 1975 and began using Alembics exclusively. Of course he's known for using his Jazz live, pre-1975, but he used several other basses in the studio (like a couple P's) and, rarely, live.

The infamous sunburst jazz is now hanging in a glass case at his home in the UK. I think that it made it onto one track on The Thunderthief, but otherwise it doesn't see much action anymore due to neck and fret issues. Jonsey also played the "tele style" P-bass shown above, a Fender VI (tuned E-C), several Alembics, and a stash of Manson basses and guitars (basses by Hugh, guitars and other acoustic/oddballs by brother Andy). There are other instruments involved, but the Fender sunburst was his #1 from his early work as a studio musician in the early '60s all the way through the mid '70s.
