  1. The ampeg sounded much better than the GK. So now he is thinking Ampes B2R with a BSE410h cabinet.
This is going to run $1076. We also found a Peavey FireBass 700 with a 115bvx cabinet for $1001. From what it seems the the break in quality is at this price range. The Cheaper GK Back lines seriesjust does not sound as good and does not have the quality. From what I am learning it is worht spending the extra $200 to get the tone and Quality. I guess the ampeg is the way to go. What Can I save on used Ampeg setup?

Yo dude, you could get a much better deal... Heres an Ampeg B4R on ebay for 400 with 3 days left:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2570889245&category=23787
    That's 1000 watts, 700 more than the B2R.

And here's the Ampeg BSE410 on ebay too:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2570048387&category=43372

Or you could consider an Avatar cab, for about $350, I hear great things, and the 4x10 handles 1400 watts. So that would go perfectly with the B4R. It just depends if you want to use ebay or whatever.

the BSE410 is Ampeg's lowest quality cab. I would get the B2R head and a 4-ohm Avatar 410 cab. http://www.avatarspeakers.com these cabs are the greatest deal in the business. They are well built, sound great, and are super affordable. you could also get him an avatar 210 & 115 (both MUST be 8 ohms or else you will fry the amp) stack, which will look like this and will not cost too much more than the BSE410:

That setup will rock. Go AVATAR! :bassist:

  5. I will watch these on ebay....I have been watching Ebay and found that most of the time Ampeg items have been going for close to the shop price by the time you add the shipping charges. I have found no deals that make buying the used equipment thatmuch of a savings. For instance a B2R sells at the shop for $538.30 plus 6% sales tax = $571. Now Shipping on ebay will run $50 to $60 Bucks. So to get a "Deal" or "Value" I would want to at least save my shipping cost and $50 to $100 bucks right?
$571-$50 Shipping - $100 Savings for used = $421 Ebay bid... I have tried this approach several bids and always get beat out by $50+ .... Ampeg really seem to hold their Value.

  6. You are telliong me that I can get him 2 10s and 1 15 for the same price I am paying for the 1 ampeg 14BSE? We do not have dealers for Avater in our area.

Avatar is mail order. There's no middle man so that's part of why they're less expensive.

GK and Ampeg have very different tones. Ampeg is warmer/classic and GK is more modern/hifi. If you and your son like the Ampeg tone that's good but you're right, Ampegs hold their value used.

There are cheaper ways to get a similar tone if cost is really an issue. The sansamp bass driver di box can make even a GK sound like an Ampeg.

You order Avatars directly from www.avatarspeakers.com

The Ampeg BSE410 is $499 + probably around $50 shipping. The Avatar 210 is $229 + $29 shipping. The Avatar 115 is $239+$42 shipping. Or, you could get him the Compact Bass 115 for $199 + $29 shipping along with the 210. Or just an Avatar 410 for $339 + $42 shipping and will blow away the BSE410 which is Ampeg's worst cab. Plus, you can save some money too. :bassist:

  9. Sounds like I need to get him the Avatar with the Ampeg head. I might not save a ton But I will get better quality. Now the goal is at some point to have 4 10s and 1 15. What ohms do I want? 8 ohms for the 410 then 8 on the 15 so in the end they run at 4 each... sorry for my ignorance. Ask me something about paintball or Architectural Project management and I am there other wise this ohms and watts stuff is greek to me.

You will want them each in 8 ohms. You could also get the B410 and the CB115 and turn the CB115 on it's side. It's 20 bux cheaper than the regular B115 and alot lighter.

  11. Can you tell me the advantages of the Avatar over the Ampeg with regards to specs? Looks like I can save $100 buck on a 410 Cabinet.

The Avatar handles more power than the Ampeg
The Avatar is made of Plywood and the ampeg i believe is made of partcle board (i could be wrong).
The Avatar is lighter than the ampeg.
The avatar is probably more efficient than the ampeg (meaning it will be louder)

Sorry, it's too early in the morning to be looking up specs.

  14. I find that the BSE-410 H is not the same as the b410. There is a space below in the Speakers on the B410. What is this for? So What is that space for and is this more like the BSE410hlf?
oh sorry for the double post above.

The space is called a port. It allows sound/air from the back of the speakers contribute to the tone. I think porting allows a lower frequency response. I prefer ported cabs.

Ported or not, you're still paying for the Ampeg name on a cab that is not up to par with their classic cabs. The avatar will most likely be more efficient, meaning louder, and with the B2R head being only 350 watts, the more efficient, the better. Otherwise he will start complaining for a more powerful head very soon.
