Why do bass players in videos (especially funk) usually look like they just ate a bad burrito, or just smelled something awful?
Sometimes I watch with the sound off, because the facial expressions are priceless.

  2. I'm fortunate enough to not have the talent for those kind of faces. That doesn't stop my bandmates from laughing anyway. I wonder what's so funny? :D

I was referred to as "the Muppet" by some guys i played with once. Unlike guitar players we concentrate on getting it right.

Sometimes I’ll have a look on my face which might lead someone to believe that I’m deep in thought. Not true.

In reality, I’m trying to remember I where I put my keys, my asthma inhaler, whether or not I put ibuprofen in my gig bag, or locked the door, etc…..

  15. There's a theory about how many bassists have older siblings who sing. They are the ones always preening themselves and practicing corny dance maneuvers in front of the mirror. For the bassist, never having seen yourself in the mirror before negates any inhibitions about making faces while feeling and meaning what you play. The honesty shines through better than any presumptuous stage antics do. Just a theory, mind you. ;)

  18. I’d better not join the fray about facial expressions.. I got not thing to laugh about. Mostly a total deadpan with intermittent bouts of disgust…lol!

In High school, the bass player in my first band would concentrate so hard on playing that his mouth would hang open, tongue out, with the occasional drool.
