Just got my EMG 40Js, should I go for 9V or 18V?

  1. I won't be soldering stuff since I don't have a nice soldering iron and my skills are limited. I was wondering whether to go with 9V or 18V for a Dean fretless bass.

  2. I tried both in one of my former basses. With 18 volts you get a lot more fundamental, but with 9 volts they have more of that 'zing' on the top end, more harmonics and less fundamental, which is the classic EMG sound that a lot of people are going for.

I guess it depends on what kind of music you're playing. I play rock so I prefer 9 volts but I wouldn't complain if I were forced to use an EMG-equipped bass wired for 18 volts.

ok, the 9v vs. 18v thing has been done to death, and this is a very old thread,
so i didn't mean to bump it to start another "more headroom" discussion...:p

anybody know about the sonic differences?
