    Hi Guys,

I received a couple of weeks ago my new bass, a New Standard La Scala Hybrid, and wanted to share my gratitude towards the community here, who helped me make my purchase decision.
I live in Sydney Australia, so I effectively bought it through word of mouth, starting with a recommendation from a mate bass maker and fellow Talk bass member, Matthew Tucker.
Wil and the guys from the company were very helpful, it arrived in mint condition, all set up by what one would call I suppose world specialists in jazz upright basses.
It's a great instrument, and I can see why it has received many positive posts here. To paraphrase one of the posts I read, it's a lot of bass for the money.
The only thing I'll do is take the full circle off, as it doesn't please me nearly as much as the holy grail of bass amplification, the Ehrlund pickup thingy.
Thanks again to all of you guys who posted here about them, and steered me towards a purchase I will enjoy for decades to come, I'm sure.:bassist: Cheers, Al.

Congrats! I have Marcus Johnson to thank for my decision to buy mine, and another TB member who was selling his. The bass turned out to be the very first LaScala hybrid ever made, and at 47 I wonder if I'll live long enough to ever outgrow this bass. I kind of doubt it. At this point, it's my musical wife and soulmate.

    Now post some wedding pics!

Fully carved. Had it for two years now. Had Evahs on it but recently changed to Belcantos. Great basses!

I brought a LaScala hybrid this year and figured I would keep my old Kay as a backup. After a few days with my new bass I picked up the Kay again and quickly realized I could never go back. How does that old saying go...?

Here's Al's new La Scala; I don't think he'll mind if I post the pic. We had a bit of a bash in the workshop and it sounded lovely, as expected!

(the only full-length picture I have, is one with Al in it; if he gives the go-ahead I'll post it too)

  11. Unless I am mistaken, that's the second New Standard in Australia.

I am very familiar with the first!! :smug:

    Enjoy.

I've had my new LaScala hybrid for 6 months, and am very happy with it. The workmanship is perfect. I ordered it with a detachable neck for travel. It is very solid, I also got a Gage travel case, which is very easy to handle. I did have to reposition the sound post ( used a kit ) the first time after pulling it out of the case by stupidly lifting it up by the front face. Next time put a strap around to apply a little pressure, and no problem. I used two local haul and one long haul airlines, and only had one $60 overweight charge.
The sound seems very clear, and I am very pleased with it. For example, it is very easy to tune with harmonics because the sound is clear and almost identical from string to string, unlike my previous new inexpensive foreign bass which was difficult to tune because of the extraneous sounds. I felt like I was sumo wrestling with that previous bass, and now it's a pleasure to practice.

    See attached photo,

Detachable neck?!?! I must look into this. That'd mean no more crappy rental basses.

Congrats on the bass! I've had my Cleveland for 7-8 years now (can't believe it has been that long), and I've only played a handful of basses that I liked as much/more...and they all cost at least 4-5 times what a New Standard does. I have played many basses that made me wish my bass was with me instead though.
