The cello was my first instrument, and when I started playing DB, it was entirely in a jazz context.
To get some chops, I started shedding some Simandl among other things, and I would always struggle with the bow hand, trying to translate what I learned on the cello entirely to the bass. When I started taking classical lessons, and learning the real fundamentals of Double Bass technique, I slowly learned that the bass is really an entirely different animal from the cello, and some things translate, while lots of things don't.

Play whatever you feel passionate about hearing right now, and if that changes in the future, make the switch.

Oh, and +1 on Eggleston and Sollee. They're wonderful players.
  3. I also went the other way, I play the cello and have for around 8 years (im 16) and the skills I learnt from cello made it extremely easy to start bass, and when I play a frettless bass the notes come 100% naturally.
