keep rerular musicman pickups or get emgs?

  1. Ive been wonderin if i should switch the pickup in my musicman to emgs, or if i should keep the one i have in it. One person told me to keep the standard pickup because it keeps it sounding like a musicman, unique.

Why, indeed? On top of that, there are no EMGs that are direct replacements for the MM pickup--you'd have to replace the pickguard, and maybe have the body of the bass routed out.

While you're at it, you'd probably want to substitute the volume pot for one with a lower resistance (the low impedence EMGs usually ship with different pots than you'd find with a high impedence passive pickup), etc.

If you really want to swap the pickup, consider a Bart or Duncan, both of whome make direct replacements for the MM pickup.

As much as I like EMGs, there are two basses in which I would NEVER change the pickups:

    1) Rickenbacker

    2) MusicMan

Since when does EMG make a MM pickup. I thought the only people that made MM pickups are SD and Bartolini...

Don't do it. If you change the pickup, it will no longer sound like a MM. If you really don't like the way the MM sounds, then you should sell it and buy a different bass.

MM's have great resale value and move pretty quickly on the used market, BTW.

yeah dude don't change those pickups...

  9. I don't own a Musicman (yet) but love the sound, which I believe won't be the same if you put a different pup in. You will simply create a Frankenstein bass. I'd say don't do it.
