what are some of the tricks to make your strings sounding crips for longer periods of time?

I usually wrap them up into coils (the way they come packaged) and throw them into a pot of boiling water for about 10-20 minutes.

I just got a new set of Sliky's for my G&L 5, and they sound dead after about a month...maybe becasue I've been playing a lot more recently. But the slinky's still sound good on my Stingray4.

Also, have you heard of the trick of melting solder onto the bridge end of the string, just after the ferrule, to keep them from stretching excessively?
