    Price:
    $3800
    Strings:
    5
    Fretless:
    • Y
    Location:
    New York
Up for sale is my prized Kenneth Lawrence Brase ll Fretless 5-String.
This instrument is one of the most beautiful, masterfully built, best sounding basses on the planet.
I am at a stage in my playing that I have to reduce my number of basses down to two (fretted and frettless) and, as amazing as it is on every level, this bass is just not getting played enough.
Ken is more focused on guitar building these days so these fine instruments don't come up for sale too often.

    $3800 shipped. CONUS only.

    Specs:

    Build completed January 2007.
Woods:Ash body, Cocobolo top, Maple neck, Katalox fingerboard, Katalox ramp, wooden knobs
Electronics:Custom Duncan dual-J magnetic pup w/Ebony wood cover, RMC piezo* saddles in bridge with Bartolini buffer; Duncan pre customized by Ken Lawrence.
    Scale:34" scale
    String Spacing:19mm at bridge.
    Weight:10.2 lbs.
The bass comes with a new Protec Contego hybrid bag and is currently strung with new set of DR Hi-Beams (45 - 125).

*The combination of the magnetic pickup with the piezo is crucial. If you haven't played a fretless bass with this arrangement you are really missing something special. Opens up a whole new world of sonic possibilities.

(Cell phone) Photos meant to show the lovely woods.
    PM me for more pics.

Absolutely stunning bass. Wow. Nobody, imho, builds basses like Ken.

Agreed. Ken is certainly one of the top builders out there. Every time I play this bass I marvel at the craftsmanship and how great it sounds. Everyone should get the opportunity to play one of these.
I'd love to keep it but after many years of trying (and buying) different basses I've come to the point where I simply have to get back to basics and keep only the instruments I play on a regular basis.

I have a KL fretless and although I have many fretted basses.... I only have one fretless :) I'll never sell it. I dont think Ken works with cocobolo anymore so that makes this bass even more special. GLWTS.

You are correct. When I corresponded with Ken about the specifications of this bass he told me that he doesn't work with cocobolo anymore.

Funny you say that because the Diva is a fretless I really want to try but haven't had the opportunity.

Wait, why does Ken no longer use Cocobolo?

    Gorgeous bass btw.

Cocobolo is actually really tough to work with. Spector has chosen the same route too. There's only two USA NS Spectors with Cocobolo tops ever made. The dust (especially if inhaled) from Cocobolo is toxic. That's the big problem. It's interesting that it's part of the Rosewood family too. Makes it special if you have a bass with this wood. :)

    What he said.
When I bought this bass I corresponded with Ken Lawrence to confirm the specs and he replied that he doesn't work with cocobolo anymore.
It is a beautiful wood but difficult to work with. You don't see that many for this reason.
