Hey does any one know how to play King Floyd's Groove me?
It sounds like it starts out in the key of C, and plays the 1 twice, the 3rd, 5th, 6th, and 7th, and then repeats. But it modulates to a lower key possibly the lower 3rd. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks. :)

If you are playing the song in C, than your change would be to G for one measure - back to C than to G again. The bass run goes like this. CC E G AC

our band does it in B

basically verses are the I w/ the V

chorus is IIIm and IV then vack to the I

great song - in the immortal words of our keyboard player - "Chicks dig it"

The bass to the "Groove Me" verse is a lesson in 'playing the spaces'...something similar is the bass to the verses on Brick's "Dazz"(recently transcribed in Bass Player mag).

I agree JimK. Playing it as often as I have, it takes some restraint to let the spaces "happen" and not try to throw in some extra notes (especially if we lay the tempo back for some extra funk) . . . but the spaces are what gives it the groove.

King Floyd & Jean Knight were of the Malaco recording 'empire'...I just checked. ;)
www.malaco.com has a history page. It does mention that their session players were in great demand; of course, no names mentioned.
King Floyd has a "Best Of" album that lists Don Barrett & Vernie Robbins as bassists(www.allmusic.com).

I'll check my Jean Knight album when I get home...confidence is low, however.

  19. I was under the impression that at one point Duck Dunn cut that line for somebody at Stax. Whether it was a cover or not, I don't remember.

Stax would probably be a cover...King Floyd's version is from Malaco Records.

Is this tune transcribed in the book, What Duck Done?
