You can get a Lakland Skyline 55-01 with upgraded electronics for under a grand, and I've seen several used MM5's for well under a grand. GC/Atlanta has a white one for $899.
I'd go for the Lakland. As for a NEW MM5 for under a grand, ain't gonna happen!

I was assuming that we were talking about new basses. If not, sure, it's easy to find 'em under a grand.

  7. Everybody is talking about the 55-01 with upgraded electronics. Isn't that just the 55-02? Or is their other p/u options?

The 55-01 has the MM/J pups and American electronics. The 55-01 has two Bart soaps with a Bart system, but they're made or "crafted":D in Korea. Dan stuck a 55-94 system in my 55-01, and it sounds great.

  9. You mean 55-02 has the mm/j and American electronics?
