I'm really just ranting and this is fun writing down. Someone talk me out of killing this guy....

I'm playing regular gigs on the Disney/Sea World/Convention circuit in the Central Florida area and am about to strangle the guitarist with his own strings. I'm really open to comments about my tone etc. since I think everyone should be striving to better their playing and overall sound of their rigs. Recently the guitar player started to complain about my tone saying that it's too mid-rangy and that it isn't suited for our band (Soul, R&B mixed in with some Country). Keep in mind that I mostly play a Fender RBV about 90% of the time in the neck position to emulate a P-bass. I also run through a MarkBass LM3 with the mid controls almost off and I play fingerstyle with this group and play close to the neck.

I get numerous comments on my tone and playing as positive, yet this guy doesn't let up. He even went so far as to tell me that my bass isn't really a 'Fender' because it isn't what everyone else uses... idiot! Saturday night I took my MMan Sterling for a couple of slap funk tunes and he told me that Music Man basses are terrible for slap.

What is something sarcastic, funny or just plain rude that I can say to shut this ass up?

I'm told it takes 18 pigs about 2-3 hours to dispose of the body.
You have to shave the head and remove the teeth (for the pigs' sake).

    Just sayin'...:)

MM bassed are terrible for slap? I would have told him the only thing better for slapping than a MM is his face.
  4. "What did I say that sounded like 'Tell me your opinion'?"

"Yeah, thanks, I'll get right on that" - then do nothing.

"Thanks for your feedback; I'll try to give a s&*t."

"Wait; YOU'RE being critical about MY tone?"

Say nothing ... just shrug and walk away. Seriously. That type won't hear what you're saying, don't waste your breath.
    Tennesseemick likes this.
  6. I suppose you could be mean or sarcastic back towards him and pick on his playing, personal looks, gear, and etc. But honestly, if your tone is good, I'd just shine it on and look at him as if he was a dumb @$$ and laugh in his face. Cheers.
  7. 'This is an excellent bass tone, and I like it. Try to get used to it.'

If you're trying to emulate a P bass 90% of the time why not sell the Sterling and get a P?. I would call the guitarist out in front of the group and ask if anyone else has a problem with your tone? and tell the guitarist in front of everyone else not to give anymore advice on your tone unless he's willing to buy you a real 'Fender".
  9. MusicMan not good for slapping? Maybe he should send Flea an email or something, you know, to let him know before he makes another million dollars doing it wrong.

Guy sounds like the perfect combination of idiot and douche. Just how is his tone for the oldies gig?

Just hold your bass out to him and say 'Show me how it's done.'

edit: And if that doesn't work just put him in a headlock and give him a good knuckle scruff on the top of his head. Guaranteed best buds after that.

You could simply raise the digitus medius to him.

What you got is what you got, he can either buy you a new bass or he can deal with it.

+1 on this. Unless he's the BL or he signs your check I'd just give him the shrug and walk away.

Some people here don't like the term "gui****" but guys like this fit the description.

Can't believe how this is sort-of looked over, and I might add if it's with the guy's own strings it can probably be made to look just like suicide too... :bag:

Say "My tone is good." as if it were as much a fact as his own opinions.

This. And then give him the 'Oh, nothing...' treatment upon further inquiry. Drives some people really mad.

For reference, do you have a video of the band playing?

Oops, sorry I meant the initial "suicide" bit, not the feeding bit(s)
