    middle bout 38.7cm
    lower bout 68.7cm

    body length- back 114.5cm
    rib width 21.8cm
    string length 42"

    Includes:
A replacement lightweight pearwood tailpiece made by, canadian luthier, Dominik Zuchowicz.
The original Kolstien tailpiece not installed.
    A Realist pickup not installed.
    BMR bass wheel
A Soundwear Professional padded bass bag.

I bought this bass in 2004 from the original owner.
The label in the bass states, "Kostein Fendt model bass/ made expressly for David Hertzberg / by/ Samuel Kolstein & sons, Ltd. / anno 2002/ Baldwin New York, USA."
While David owned this bass in college he did do some damage to one of the lower ribs. Barrie Kolstein repaired it for him free of charge (I tried to show the repaired area in the 4th photo).
Interestingly, a well regarded Chicago luthier thought the back and ribs were poplar instead of willow.

I have been to Kolsteins a few times and have tried more than a couple of their Fendt models basses. This is the only one I really liked, being the clearest and most responsive.

I am currently having to sell off a good portion of my musical instruments and equipment; the place I work for has been directly effected by the slow economy.

I may also be posting my plywood Epiphone bass soon.

Did you ever decide to sell the Epiphone? Is the Fendt still for sale?

    Still for sale.

I am sort of surprised there hasn't been more serious interest.
    I suppose its our economy.

The Epiphone will be for sale soon. I am waiting until I have some decent pictures. PM me if you have questions about either bass.

Is the bass still available? Can you describe the sound in a few words?

    sorry i missed your question.

    It is still available.

    All things subjective:
    The bass is loud.
The pizz is authoritative- a bit dark but punchy, even, and full.
The acro has often been described as organ pedal tones- a great orchestral bass.

  13. How does the bass respond to aggressive bow strokes like a hard in the string marcato or spiccato? Does it have that big orchestral bite and instant attack that's often need in the section?

its not my bass, but i do own a Kolstein Fendt and it has won the praises of Peabody professors, and Baltimore Symphony Orchestra memberS. The bass sounds and plays like one that would sell for 18,000. This really is a steal here guys. And it handles low end with a breeze, and will handle a C-Extension with ease. It is really a joke that this bass hasnt sold yet. If anyone is looking for a bass for College (and even beyond) you WONT, will not, no where in H-E-Double Hockey Sticks, find a bass of this quality for this price. and the Kolstein shop is world class.

I should say that I have played this bass when I was in Chicago last and it really is a great instrument. If I was able to come up with the money I'd be on it, but I think lots of us are in that boat. It is a dark and rich sound under the bow - I'd love to be playing it in a section, and it would take the extra lows of a C extension well, I'd think.
