Kt66's in a Mesa bass 400

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by astheshipsails, Aug 16, 2012.

  1. Has anyone tried kt66's in a Bass 400? If so how did they sound compared to 6L6's or 6550's?

I just put some KT66 into my hot rod deville....

Really like the tone but they draw current differently, not sure if the mesa 400 can handle it

I like the gold lion RI

they wouldn't fit in a bass400, very large
  4. I think they should physically fit. This is the older version with six power tubes. I currently have 6550's in it, and I have heard of people using kt88's. I am hoping to find out if they will function properly in the amp.

I don't believe KT88s and KT66s are interchangeable. I could be wrong though.

Are you sure you don't mean KT-88s? I'm pretty sure those will fit as I've read plenty of folks have done this and Eurotubes sells a KT-88 retube kit for this amp.

Subbed b/c I've been thinking of doing this to my 6L6 loaded Bass 400....

Hi-fi into an old tube amp
I've used JJ's KT-88's (spacious lows) and currently use Tung Sol RI 6550's (a little flatter across the frequency spectrum). Great upgrade for the amp! Between all the great 6L6's, 6550's and KT-88's availble you should be able to find something awesome. I am pretty sure KT-66's would require a mod.
