My dad has played bass in the LA Philharmonic for the last 35 years. All concerts have been cancelled since March, so he’s been spending his time deconstructing his favorite rock songs for string bass - combining bass and guitar parts, while attempting to sing. Here is some Jimi Hendrix for you all.

This has been a fun little quarantine project. Check out his video here (filmed by my brother Ike Rofe):

This is profoundly cool. I don't always hear a sound in the DB that I think "wow, I love that!" but his tone is amazing.
Pretty awesome wall of instruments too.

Very cool Leo. Tell us more about Peter Rofé and his bass playing!

What bass is he using here? What strings do the guys in the Phil use? I’ve heard Kaplan heavies. Does he use a bent endpin?

So I played your video while my wife was listening. She is picky about music. She said she likes when a singer has something to express, and that is why Layne Staley is her favourite. So that’s a compliment to Peter’s singing!

Hi Casey, I'm Leo's dad Peter Rofé. I just joined TalkBass so I didn't see this post until now. Thanks for the positive feedback! My bass is a George Panormo made in London in 1820. I do use Kaplan heavy gauge strings, as do some of my colleagues in the LA Phil; it really depends on the instrument. I use an angled carbon fiber Laborie endpin.

    Hi Peter
I took lessons with you way back in the early 90’s at CalArts. You were an excellent teacher then and I love your pandemic haze songs. Right on. Great to see you playin.
