I'm in Florida and just put an oil based Old Masters red mahogany gel stain on a bass body.

I'd like to avoid poly and use an aerosol gloss lacquer clear coat as I'm in a high humidity area and the thin coats and fast dry time sounds good.

That said I've googled and can't seem to find a clear answer on whether lacquer will react badly with the gel stain.

Anybody out there who can drop some knowledge?

I've used exactly that combination with no problems. Give the gel stain plenty of dry time, at least 24 hours, before you seal with sanding sealer then lacquer. You're good to go.
