Lakland 01 Club Part 2

I just picked up a 44-01 for a good price on reverb...

..I'm really digging the modifications the last owner did, but I can't figure out where the neck is from!? Its definitely a Lakland neck and the 'Crafted in Indonesia' is on the back of the headstock, so I'm guessing not custom...

I'm hoping the blocks are real inlays and not stickers...

Those knobs look great. The blocks are stickers. You can see the dots underneath, and Lakland blocks would be pearl with abalone corners if it were a 'custom'.

With a book of original tunes that spans close to 20 years now, I've been transcribing/transferring a lot of them into MuseScore lately to bring them back to life, and for repertoire in future and current groups and projects. It's also been fun to create my own 'Aebersold' playalongs for originals and work on soloing and melodies with them. Export a WAV rendering of the scores, import into a DAW, and you're off! I thought my old Lakland 55-01 sounded pretty good on this the other day and wanted to share. I'd never done this one on electric at all... it was conceived as a call-and-response melody 15 years ago for double bass and sax and yep, back-and-forth to those upper-register melody parts and 1st position are a big jump on DB! The other video is a run through on the solo changes of a new tune I finished last month, on my fretted 55-01. I understand these basses are used mostly as mod vehicles these days, but man... I've never found a reason to do anything to them, even after 15+ years of ownership. Cheers!

Amazing! Proof that playing beats tinkering any day. While you were playing them stock for 15+ years, writing songs and getting better and better, I was trying different pickups, preamps, selling basses, buying basses, playing the same runs over and over again. Great playing! Thanks for the music!

These are great. Thank you so much. The higher register parts on the fretless track reminded me of this melody:


I also loved your "upgrade vehicles" comment and your video of ant example of how the fretted sounds stock. I just bought a 2016 4-01and was wondering if I could avoid going on the 'upgrade train' with it, trying to improve my sound with equipment rather than fingers. You've given me goals to aspire to, thank you.

Apologies to anyone who has already heard this in the Lakland owners forum

So I got this the mail yesterday

...and as a couple of you mentioned, those are STICKERS not INLAYS like the Reverb ad specified. Also, as anyone who knew better suspected... it looked terrible. Before even plugging it in I spent a couple of hours on sticker removal and voila!

I think the knobs (which look the opposite of terrible) look great this way. Plus, I'm pleased to say that the MK1's sound pretty enjoyable on the Double 4 that I'm playing through.

Lesson learned, sometimes you can get a great deal on something if you are willing to undo something someone else has f'd up
