Folks, I finally received my 55-01. I could not be more pleased, if this bass is Lakland's bottom of the line I just have to see their top of the line basses. So here it goes, my 55-01 came in a natural finish ash body with a maple neck and fretboard. The body is actually three pieces of lumber, but it's bookmatched cleverly enough to make it look like one solid chunk of lumber. The finish is deep and glossy and the neck has a really nice satiny feel to it. Sound; the bass sounds good while still unplugged, and once plugged in the twin Bartolini soapbars give it a very broad tonal palette. The the bypass switch on the pre-amp is a nice touch allowing a nice passive tone. Playability: in a word - superb, the 35" scale neck is very comfortable with a nice pre-CBS Fender feel to it. All in all, at $699 without the case it's really hard to beat. I put my mine through the paces with everything from Led Zeppelin to Peter Gabriel and it responded readily to every demand that I made of it. IMO, a true players bass at a very reasonable price. Peace!
I bought a 55-01 from the Dude last summer. Damn nice instrument for the money. I unfortunately sold it in a fit of GAS, but I still have my Lakland Skyline Joe Osborn that I also bought through the Dude:
Very good score. The whole skyline series has a great rep here at talkbass. Thanks for giving us your review, though please do a User Review officaly here at Talkbass. BTW-Let's see some pics!
It's really a tough bass to beat, especially for the price! I got mine as my first fretless and the transition has been effortless so far. Great sound and playability. Hope you enjoy yours and much as I'm enjoying mine.
