I saw that the new skyline is out on Bass Central's website. Has anyone tried one yet?

Is the skyline series supposed to be the affordable version of a Lakland? What r they goin for? I have a Lakland 54-94 that's a great bass, but I sold my first born son to get it!

I'll be at the Lakland shop tomorrow (Friday, 10/26).

I've played the skyline version (55-01) of the 55-94 last time I was there, but after tomorrow, I can give you a better review of it. Although, I am going there to talk to Dan Lakin about returning to work for Lakland - so my review may be a little favorable.

  7. The Skyline isn't available just yet, but according to what we've (I'm a Bass Central employee, for those that are unaware) been told by John at Lakland (tell him Gard said hey Herm), they should be "in-store" in late November...just in time for my birthday! :D I haven't played it, but a couple of my co-workers that made it to the Winter NAMM show were pretty impressed by what they saw and played. I'm looking forward to it.

Herm - Good luck getting the gig, let me know if you do!

Hey Herm, let us know how it unfolds. It'd be nice to know an insider at Lakland, even though I imagine you could answer my questions already since you worked there before.

    Good Luck!

The folks over at Lakland r very cool. When I was shopping for my 5-er, I just walked in the shop and John greeted me and showed my around. They sat me down in fron of a huge rig and brought me bass after bass and let me play as long as I wanted. I couldn't buy directly from them, though, I had to buy it from a local shop. But meeting the luthiers, seeing the woodshop, talking to John... it made the whole experience very enlightening and fun. I met John, again, on a jingle session and he talked about the then new Joe Osborne bass that was coming out. He's a great guy.
If you're ever in Chicago, even if your not shopping for a new bass, drop by Lakland. You won't regret the experience!

Yes $900 retail looks like a good price and they should be challenging well in a very competetive price range.

I am very tempted to order one - I phoned the Bass Centre in London, this morning, who are official Lakland dealers and they are getting a UK price for me. My birthday is in November as well - so maybe it'll be a present from me to me! :D

I meant Dan, not John. Dan Lakin. That's the guy I talked to. Sorry.

I'll be checking out the 55-02 model. It's going to have the same electronics as the American series.

  13. id still wait out for used. the street price on the 5502 with the american electronics is going to be around a grand. you can get a used deluxe 5594 for around 1500-1600. so the korean isnt really that much of a deal. now when theyre selling used for around 600 bucks, then i'll consider it.

Hey guys, wanted to post about this sooner, but I have been very busy this weekend. As I stated last week, I went to the Lakland shop to discuss working for them with Dan (John says hey Gard)

Dan had sent me an email about two weeks ago to run the idea of coming back to Lakland as an employee past me. So I figured I'd go talk to him about it. Not going to happen (at least at this time). I've got my piano tuning and cabinet/furniture building biz going pretty well now. between that and the lack of decent money being offered - I had to decline. The commute would be too long as well

Anyway, I wanted to post my thoughts on the skyline series basses. It's the file attached to this post. If you have any questions that I haven't answered in this "review", please post them here.

  16. Herm -

Sounds impressive. I didn't get to go to summer NAMM, but the guys from BC that did were blown away by the Skylines. I'm looking forward to our first batch, I've been fighting off the desire to snag a used C55-94 that's here, maybe this will help! ;)

Sorry to hear that things didn't work out with you returning to work for Dan & the clan, but I understand why.

These sound like a good deal. However, with a hardly-used 55-94 or 55-63 (my fave) going in the $1500 range, I think I'd opt for that. Those are the best deals out there, I think. I can imagine what a used Skyline will sell for, eventually. Bet they won't depreciate like the full blown Laklands have, though.
