Hope I have this in the right forum location.
I have a couple of Import P basses, one long, and one short scale.
I don't know much about bass tuners.
Was wondering if it is possible to put the smaller sealed tuners on them?
    Especially the short scale.
The bushing hole size may be the determining factor?
    Thanks in advance.

  2. It will likely leave you with unsightly holes in the headstock.

first I have to find a tuner that will fit?
I wonder if they make sealed tuners the size of the open tuners.
These are cheap imports, that I play and use for testing my Sidewinder and Multi-Coil pickups.
I have tooth picks to fill the holes on the back of the headstock.

  4. The worst case scenario is that you simply fill and redrill the tuner reams.

Slipping the smaller tuner thru the collar (using it as a spacer) from the larger tuner usually works if there are enough threads on the tuner shaft. Done it a few times, and it looks ok, as all is centered.

Can you tell me more about that.
So If I take the old tuner off, just mount the new one in the bushing, is that correct?

That's what I was able to do a few times, tho there are not many threads left for the new tuner bushing, but don't really need many. In my cases, the new tuner/bushing fit pretty close inside the old bushing, that may not always be the case.

Any particular brand of Tuner you used, or just bargain tuners.
The basses I'm working on are SX, both B-stocks.

Used bargain, but Ibanez/ Schector/ Gotoh-style tuners and into Peavey/ Mighty-Mite/ P style necks with typical Fender open type tuners.

Here's a quick shot of a Peavey project- they are straight, but the wide-angle lens does the fish-eye thing: BushedTuners.JPG

Never tried that, but it sounds like a simple and brilliant solution. Thank you.
