Larger Rickenbacker 4003 bodies between 80's and 90's

    Any idea if this was done more for balance, looks, or was it possibly a cost cutting measure?

    I have an '89 Rickenbacker (left) with a larger body, but slightly slimmer headstock, than the '97 Rickenbacker (right). Interestingly the '89 has more output as well.

    Thanks! I was surprised. I actually prefer the '89 with the larger body and for whatever reason, whether it's pickups and/or more wood, sounds beefier.
