Hi everyone! We’ve all seen Larry using a monitor speaker behind him at the height of his head instead of an amp and I also know he’s using a Schoeps mic. But what I can’t figure out is what preamp is he using to connect the mic to the speaker. I can see him using one behind him on a music stand. Anybody got any info on it? Thank you all in advance and cheers
Hi Ric! Thank you for replying. Yes I’ve heard about that one but that must’ve been back in the days. Now I’ve sewn him use something different lately.
Someone told me some months ago, that Larry Grenadier uses a Felix Preamp from Grace Design, but I'm not sure, if this is really so... it's only by hearsay In this feature about his solo-album is only a "mic preamp from Grace Design" mentioned...
In this one it looks like he has a Grace Design Felix behind him. You can see it a little at 6:53....
But I can understand the choice of Larry Grenadier... the Felix is a really, really "hot tool".... In combination with a real good mic like the Schoeps or a Brauner Classic or a Remic you can "climb into the bass"...
me too but as mentioned before....I "replaced" the Schoeps by a Remic and/or a Brauner Phantom classic
By the way and a little off topic... as I found it not sooo comfortable to use the Felix down on the ground, I converted a monitor stand to a stand for the Felix.. and it works really fine...
Hello! He’s using a Schoeps CMC6 with MK41 capsule, a Grace Felix, and (typically) Mackie 12” speaker. Sounds great!
As do I, as much as I'd like to have the Schoeps CMC6 MK 41 the Remic is an incredible microphone and much easier to mount. You don't need any other aftermarket gear to mount the Remic
I believe his rider says a Mackie 12 PA Speaker or something similar. When I saw Brad Meldau here for their performance at Jazz at the Bistro. He was using the Schoeps, but you have to remember that they have a incredible FOH system. So the speaker iis for Larry's ears.
A Brauner Phantom? Damn! You guys must own a bank or something. Anyway that’s all really cool if only affordable. I’ve seen Larry use his on one of those regular orchestral music stands behind him. But that’s a really cool system. Besides, I’m so freakin acoustic I wouldn’t know what to do with so many nobs. Right now I’m trying to see if I can get enough money to buy me a Yamaha 10” and an EV RE320.
The RE320 was once the go to, but I feel newer microphones like the Remic, Nadine and Troll are easy to use, sound great, and offer better value at different price points. Just my take.
True! That’s the closest one. The rest are from five to six hundred. But I heard that ribbon mics were too fragile. Any of you tried it already? Maybe I should give it a go...
Also unless you buy that little adapter to protect from phantom which is worth a hundred more you may bump into a distracted band member who’ll screw you’re Troll up.
