Saw them last night at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz. It was a great show!

I think Laura Lee fully understands this genre's tone and style. Neither are "in your face" and it would be totally inappropriate if either one was. Her playing has solid pocket with some nice fills added to keep from getting monotonous. She and zen-drummer Donald Johnson are perfect rhythmic foils for Mark Speer's 6-string flights of fancy. Khruanbin are a really tight unit that exude enjoyment in their playing together. The style may not be your cup of tea, but they are undisputed masters of it.

"Is she using any pedals?" my daughter asked midway. To tell the truth, I don't think I saw Laura even touch the tone knob on her bass. And that didn't concern me one bit. On one song she played with her right hand far over the fretboard, plucking very close to her left hand. It induced a hollowbody-like "thonk" that I didn't know could be produced on a solid body bass. Now I've got something new to try.

Just a Keely compressor, apparently. There’s a Premier Guitar Rig Rundown on Youtube for Mark and Laura.

When I was talking with Geoffrey Muller, he informed me of something I'd been wondering...their writing process. According to him, Laura Lee pretty much writes all of the songs, and then Mark Speer and DJ come in and fill in their parts.

I’ve been bouncing around reading different interviews online and thought this one one was worth sharing. Be sure to read Thomas Jefferson’s letter.

It’s interesting, the vocals strike me as somewhat ambient, almost as if they’re another instrument. Maybe it’s just me, but I can hardly make out the words.

I feel sorta the same way as markjazzbassist. I like the music, but I prefer when their vocals are more like instruments, more background.
