Saw them last night at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz. It was a great show! I think Laura Lee fully understands this genre's tone and style. Neither are "in your face" and it would be totally inappropriate if either one was. Her playing has solid pocket with some nice fills added to keep from getting monotonous. She and zen-drummer Donald Johnson are perfect rhythmic foils for Mark Speer's 6-string flights of fancy. Khruanbin are a really tight unit that exude enjoyment in their playing together. The style may not be your cup of tea, but they are undisputed masters of it. "Is she using any pedals?" my daughter asked midway. To tell the truth, I don't think I saw Laura even touch the tone knob on her bass. And that didn't concern me one bit. On one song she played with her right hand far over the fretboard, plucking very close to her left hand. It induced a hollowbody-like "thonk" that I didn't know could be produced on a solid body bass. Now I've got something new to try.
