learn to mod basses

So I am the kind of person that likes to mess with things. I was thinking of buying an SX bass and using it as a guinea pig to learn how to do mods on a bass, (replace pickups, add pickups, wiring, defretting, etc.) is there anywhere i can learn about that kind of stuff without doing it hands on, and if i do go for it, what should i keep in mind?
