I have had the fortune of recently acquiring a Carvin LB20F fretless bass (very nice bass, btw) and have been slowly getting up to speed with it. My questions to you are:

    1. What are some 'essential' fretless bass songs I should acquire and learn?

    2. What fretless bass instructional books/videos do you recommend?

    Anything by Jaco Pastorius
Anything by Pino Palladino, especially Give Blood (Pete Townshend, White City)

I don't know any particular fretless videos or books, you can basically use anything, especially books on harmony. Steve Bailey has a book on fretless, which might be good. Gary Willis' Progressive Bassics video is quite good, but isn't a fretless video per se.

Hope that helps, maybe others know more?

"Save a Prayer," Duran Duran (John Taylor)

"Everytime You Go Away," Paul Young (Pino Palladino)

"I Wish It Would Rain Down," Phil Collins (Pino again)

    "Continuum," Jaco Pastorius

If you want to hear something a little more current, Marcus Miller's latest "M2" has some really nice fretless playing on it. As far as mainstream pop/R&B goes, the fretless sound seems to have fallen out of favor for the moment.
